of the country's top national security officials. lawmakers in both parties say the fbi failed in its duty to report on the secretive investigation earlier in the process. now, before we get into the debate, here are some of the key allegations and facts about this unusual investigation. first, several months ago, government officials tell nbc news that fbi investigators responded to a complaint about anonymous e-mails sent to jill kelly, a 37-year-old volunteer liaison to mcdill air force base in tampa. kelly and her husband were friends with petraeus and his wife. the fbi began by investigating whether those e-mails constituted harassment. officials told nbc news. then the bureau subsequently found that petraeus' biographer, paula broadwell, was sending those anonymous e-mails that law enforcement officials had dealt with. the investigation also determined she was having an affair with petraeus. the fbi then used that information from the investigation to uncover more details and obtain a warrant to surveil broadwell's e-mail, according to the "wall street journal." so, in september, off

we know about the time line of how the events unfolded. back in early june the fbi began investigating what it-described as menacing e-mails sent anonymously to a woman close to petraeus. well, the e-mails allegedly came from paula broadwell who the fbi later discovered was having an affair with the cia director. well, the fbi wrapped its investigation on november 2nd after it interviewed petraeus and broadwell. but "the new york times" reports the fbi concluded there was no evidence petraeus committed any crime or breached any security problem. on election day the fbi notified james clapper, he's the director of national intelligence, about the investigation. the next day he told people in the white house. that was clapper. but the president wasn't informed until the following day, november 8th. lawmakers have expressed anger they weren't informed earlier about the investigation. here is dianne feinstein who chairs the senate intelligence committee today. >> this thing just came so fast and so hard and since then it's been like peeling an onion. every day another peel co
of the fbi, how the fbi could have been investigating it this long, and yet, you know, general petraeus was involved, director petraeus was involved. for me if it was the fbi director had the obligation to tell the president or the national security council at the earliest state so it seems to be going on for severalonths and, yet, now it appears that they're saying that the fbi didn't realize until election day that general petraeus was involved. it just doesn't add up, and you have this type of investigation. the fbi investigating emails, the emails leading to the cia director and taking four months to find out that the cia director was involved. i have real questions about this. i think a timeline has to be looked at and analyzed to see what happened. now, as far as leaving the hole, general petraeus was an outstanding general, outstanding, dedicated public official. he is going to be missed. as i'm sure senator mendez would agree, no one is irreplaceable in government, but he will have at least a short-term impact any time you lose someone like general petraeus's stature, especially
. senator feinstein says she plans to investigate why the fbi kept relevant lawmakers in the dark and plained that the fbi wasn't looking for lusty emails between a four-star general and his biographer, they were trying, instead, to find out why broadwell was harassing another woman, whose identity is unknown. >> the worry is yes and yes. we received no advance notice. it was like a lightning bolt. the way i found out, i came back to washington thursday night. friday morning, the staff director told me, there were a number of calls from press about this. i called david petraeus. >> director petraeus resigned less than a week before he was scheduled to testify before congress about the cia's response to the deadly 9/11 raid on the american consulate in benghazi. at this point, he is not expected to appear anymore. although, the vice chairman of the senate committee says petraeus might not keep quiet forever. >> he's a very capable dupe morel, mike morel, is going to be testifying next thursday. that's fine because he certainly was there when -- when all of decisions were made, rela
threatening you. we don't know what happened there. that may have been what caused the fbi to be contacted by jill kelley. i'm purely speculating there. but that's where the fbi became involved and interested in the e-mail exchanges between jill kelley and general john allen. in his opinion, innocuous entirely, but that seems to be the spark that dragged him into this particular investigation. again, this senior official saying, no sexual relationship between these two people at all. >> all right. nick payton walsh for us, obviously this is having effects around the world, getting information, trickles of information pouring in from around the world. nick, appreciate your reporting, thank you. >>> let's go down to the pentagon for more on general allen's communication with jill kelley. barbara starr is there. we're hearing about tens of thousands of documents handed over to investigators, just how much contact really did kelley have with the top commander in afghanistan because the numbers sound just unbelievable, 10,000 documents. >> don't they? it sounds staggering. it might actually be

, the way it came to light, we have some information, the fbi was investigating threatening harassing e-mails, sent to an unknown woman, paula broadwell, he was involved. >> to keep it straight, she sent e-mails she thought may be getting too close to her man who is not her man to begin with because he's married, she's married. the fbi goes-- the woman with threatening e-mails, i'm getting threatening e-mails, the fbi checks it out and leads to general petraeus. >> alisyn: reportedly. >> dave: you don't want to read too far into this, but it looks like there's another woman, but no one has reported that as of yet and there are two stories emerging on when exactly the president was informed of all of this. now, the latest, most popular report that is, is that the president was told after the election on thursday, that the white house learned on wednesday, the president was told on thursday. >> how long was the-- >> the other report, the fbi knew about this months before. there's another report from ronald kessler of news max, that says the white house intentionally sat on this until afte
afternoon to you. >> hi, jamie, the fbi came upon the affair and really by accident during a part of a bigger investigation of suspicious e-mails sent to general petraeus and perhaps others. now that he's stepped down, general petraeus will not testify this upcoming week at house and intelligence committee hearings investigating the benghazi libya attack and some republicans say that sounds a little close to suspicious. petraeus in charge of the cia since september 2011 has previously told lawmakers the attack was in response to an attack over an anti-muslim video and one g.o.p. lawmaker is talking about the timing of petraeus' departure. >> it comes days before he's set to testify before the house intelligence committee and it really begs the question he of what does the fbi know and when did they know it. how long did they sit on that information? i recall that general petraeus briefed the senate about what happened in benghazi. did he have this looming over his head? >> general petraeus, who has been married to his wife holly since 1974, called his extramarital affair, quote, u
an fbi investigation exposed the affair. sources say agents were investigating a bigger case that led them to the other woman. the woman wrote a book about general petraeus called on in. he broke the news to the president yesterday face to face at the white house asking to resign as cia director for what he called personal reasons. today general petraeus told cia staffers, quote: after being married for over 37 years i showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in extramarital affair. such behavior is unacceptable. both as a husband and a leader of the organization such as ours. this afternoon, president obama graciously accepted my resignation. general petraeus was set to testify on capitol hill next week about the terror attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. tonight, fox news has learned he will not be testifying. we have team fox coverage now. ed henry with reaction from the white house. first though to chief intelligence correspondent catherine herridge live from our d.c. newsroom. catherine, you're now uncovering much more about the investigation that led to this other woman
. >> and are you going to investigate why the fbi didn't notify you before? >> yes, absolutely. this is something that could have had an effect on national security. i think we should have been told. there is a way to do it. >> and several top republicans are demanding petraeus come back to capitol hill this week to testify before congress over the attack on the american consulate in benghazi. >> i don't see how in the world you can find out what happened in benghazi before, during and after the attack if general petraeus doesn't testify. so from my point of view, it's absolutely essential that he give testimony before the congress so we can figure out benghazi. >> let me bring in the editor in chief for "reason" magazine matt welch and jackie kucinich. we know the fbi was looking at all of this for a while. officials tell nbc news the investigation started this summer after another woman, jill kell kelley, described as a friend of david petraeus, told another person at the fbi that she's getting threatening e-mail. should the fbi have alerted someone in congress when they started this investigat
